"The Old Vicarage is featured in the January 2017 edition of The World of Interiors [photos by Alex Ramsay, text by Helena Attlee] Sumptuous Victorian country house... with three gorgeous, antique-filled rooms (no TVs but vintage radios), each with fine views across the marches and a wonderful garden" The Rough Guide to Wales "The Old Vicarage welcomes you into its hearty Victorian gothic embrace, all period half tester brass beds, antique marble sinks and blue sandstone fireplaces. Conveniently, it comes supplied with miles of great walking country between Ludlow and Hay and great nosh." The Guardian Travel section |
“Located near Presteigne, The Old Vicarage is a real treat in the lesser-known Welsh Marches region. The three-room boutique B&B features Victorian fittings, all rescued, recycled & revived from auctions and scrapyards. It boasts an almost womblike ambience of opulent, rich colours and perfect calm, the latter interrupted only by the delicate chiming of antique clocks."
Lonely Planet Guide to Great Britain 'A treasure trove of Victorian fittings. The effect is impressive with warming colours, restful bedrooms and the gentle chiming of antique clocks. Calm prevails with no TVs but vintage radios in the rooms, plenty of books to browse and a nightly dinner party to foster sparkling conversation.' The Times Online Travel section |
“My Favourite View
I discovered this view last year while filming at a house called Abbey Dore Court in Herefordshire for the latest series of Channel 4's Country House Rescue. I had booked into a not-too-distant boutique b&b called The Old Vicarage, over the border in Norton, Radnorshire.
The Old Vicarage is owned by an engaging and professional couple, Paul Gerrard & John McCall, and is furnished with great panache in Gothic Revival style. From the front of their house there were lovely views, but nothing prepared me for the view across open countryside at the back. Shown out to the terrace to have a look, I confess to 'exclaiming' - rather like the chaste heroine of a romantic novel surprised by a passionate declaration of love.
What faced me was a perfect view of gently rounded, ridiculously green hills, one rolling in from the left; one from the right; and one coming straight towards me. There was no disfigurement: no pylon, road or unsightly house - just this perfect, picture-book view. It was much the same as that wonderful moment you have as a child going on holiday, when you wait and wait for the sea to appear, and then it suddenly does. Standing in the garden of The Old Vicarage I felt that, for all its troubles, our world is a truly beautiful place...
